The Truth About Tooth Whitening

Your smile is one of the first things that other people notice. Having a smile that is beautiful and bright can make a great first impression, as well as boost your self-confidence. Many patients come into our Westfield, New Jersey dental office asking about how to whiten teeth. With so many products available on the market, it can be overwhelming when it comes to choosing the teeth whitening option that’s right for you.

How Does Teeth Whitening Work?
Most whitening products use a peroxide based gel that helps oxidize and release years of stain from the porous areas in your tooth enamel. Over time the foods we eat and the drinks we have will build up stain on the surface as well as inside of the tooth. Foods like tea, red wine and coffee deposit more stain than others, leaving teeth darker. Peroxide whitening allows these stain particles to lift from the tooth, revealing whiter, healthier looking tooth enamel that looks years younger.

Not All Whitening Treatments are Created Equal
First, the whitening products available for sale through your dental office are highly concentrated and produce more effective results than weaker formulated over-the-counter products. Second, generic whitening kits do not provide a custom fit to your teeth the way a professional kit would. They can result in gum irritation or burning.  In addition, over the counter products can result in an uneven whitening pattern throughout the mouth, as the closer the whitening product stays to your teeth, the more uniform your results will be.

Whitening toothpastes contain abrasives which, with prolonged use, may cause wearing of the enamel. Gel whitening, on the other hand, works by opening up the pore on the teeth and flushing out surface and deeper stains. This procedure has not been shown to cause any damage to the enamel of the teeth.

Professional Teeth Whitening
Parkview Dental of Westfield provides ZOOM! Whitening services as well as take home custom whitening trays which we provide all-included with the ZOOM! Fee. What makes ZOOM! Whitening so unique is that my patients can come into the office and experience whiter teeth in just one visit – in about an hour! ZOOM! Whitening works by using peroxide based gel that is activated by an advanced LED light to speed up the whitening process. The light acts as a catalyst to trigger the stain-lifting of the whitening gel, so that teeth whiten at a much faster rate. Parkview Dental has the latest in ZOOM! Technology.

Take home custom whitening trays are the other choice of professional whitening treatments. Patients have a custom impression taken of their own teeth, which is used to create a custom fitted mouth tray that is shaped snugly around each and every tooth. A small dot of whitening gel is placed in the reservoir of each tooth, and the tray is worn once a day for about two weeks. The trays are only worn for about 1-2 hours at a time. Customized trays protect the delicate gum tissue and ensure thorough tooth coverage. Touch ups are only needed for a few days every 4-6 months for most patients.
