Custom Sports Mouthguards

Custom Sports Mouthguards

Custom Athletic MouthguardFive million teeth are lost each year to sports injuries.  Of these, more than 3 million teeth will be knocked out in kids’ sporting events in the United States this year. The U.S. Surgeon General has concluded that head and facial injuries sustained during sporting activities are a major source of nonfatal injury and disability — up to one-third of all injuries in sports.

While many sporting good stores sell totally generic or even “boil and bite” mouthguards, they do not provide the same level of protection from injury as custom ones.  Dentists agree that a custom mouthguard is effective in preventing or reducing dental and facial injuries in contact sports.  In fact, when custom-fitted to the mouth, statistics show that a protective mouthpiece decreases the risk of injury by 99 percent.  There is also some, albeit preliminary, evidence that custom mouthguards may reduce the severity of concussions, as well as dental and jaw injuries.

So called “boil and bite” mouthguards also have other shortcomings. Users must keep their mouth clenched for maximum protection.  This also inhibits rapid breathing.  Further, having to concentrate on keeping your mouthguard in place also takes your attention away from where it belongs: on the game!

At Parkview Dental, we provide the best in laboratory-generated custom sports mouthguards: PlaySafe® mouthguards.  These mouthguards can be customized for the type of sport as well as with team colors or logos.
